It seems that my mother shared with my daughter that when I was around ten years old, I consumed at least one half of a bottle of cough medicine – with codeine!
I really need to monitor my mother’s story telling more closely!
In my defense, I really did have a cough. But, and I suppose more to the point, I really, really liked it!
This was prior to child proof caps and prescription-only codeine products.
(Although my two-year old granddaughter just opened MY cough medicine WITH a child-proof cap!)
But back to my shenanigans: my mother found me sound asleep on my bedroom floor in the middle of the afternoon. She had come upon the nearly empty bottle of cough medicine and was demanding to know how much I had consumed. She attempted to wake me up, standing me up and yelling at me. I can only imagine what I looked like as I kept falling asleep and sliding down the wall.
This was also prior to poison control centers and 911. Mother called our family doctor who told her not to worry; let me sleep it off; and, for heaven’s sake, hide the cough medicine! 🙂
It’s amazing I made it to adulthood!
And then again, with today’s standards, it’s amazing any of us made it to adulthood. I know you’ve all seen the lists: pre – seat belts, car seats, bike helmets, reflective tape, etc., etc., etc.
It’s interesting and sad how far we’ve come and yet, how much we’ve lost. By that I mean, losing freedom for the sake of safety.
As long as we don’t lose our sense of humor, though (and lock up the cough medicine) I really do think we’ll be OK! 🙂
